Resident Evil 4 ships a million
No, this isn’t a time warp; you haven’t traversed time and space a staggering 2 years to a world where Sony was steadily demolishing Nintendo’s console offering. Capcom has announced that shipments of Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition, a wii-remote enhanced, PS2-content-stealing, port of one of the most critically acclaimed games of last generation, have officially surpassed the 1 million mark. For some perspective: the PS2 release shipped 2 million units; the Gamecube release managed 1.6 million units.
Yes, those are shipping figures and not sales figures. Yes, shipping figures are often used to obfuscate serious problems (read: the Playstation 3 launch), but in this case, the intentions are far less nefarious. RE4:Wii was originally projected to sell only 420 thousand units and, though we aren’t given exact figures by this announcement, one can conclude they’ve at least exceeded that projection.
While being a port of a relatively old game, Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition has the distinction of being a very good port of a very good game. The pointer based aiming is so spot on, you would think the game was originally designed with it in mind. Capcom even included the option to use a Gamecube or Classic controller, as if only to remind you of how much better the game is. Hopefully this news motivates Capcom to release an original game, within the Resident Evil universe or not, with a similar control scheme.
