The best way to Smash
If there is one thing Mr. Sakurai cannot be faulted for, it is certainly the amount of options he’s managed to cram into Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Besides all the various tweaks you can do to each match, there are 4 official control schemes! However, for some, that may not be enough.
Not content with only 4 ways to play, MTV’s Multiplayer blog set out to test not only the official options, but the shadier, dark-art-controller-adapter options, too. So, in addition to trying out the Wii-remote + nunchuck, Wii-remote on its side, classic controller, and Gamecube controller options, they decided to add two other legacy controllers from the SNES and NES. Their results? Well, it turns out that the Wii-remote on its side is the best option for players new to the series, and if you’re a veteran, the Gamecube pad squeaks out an advantage over the classic controller. Unfortunately, the game isn’t playable using the SNES and NES controllers, as both controllers make it impossible for your character to move left or right.
So, if you were hording some adapters in hope of using Mario with an NES pad – for authenticity’s sake, of course – you’re out of luck. It has yet to be confirmed if Sonic is playable with a Genesis controller, though.
