North American Virtual Console Update (03/10/08)

DoReMiAre you the type of person unmoved by a mascot fighting game? Uncaring if you ever see Sonic the Hedgehog grab then spin-dash on Mario’s face? Well, I’m not sure if you’re the type of person that cares about anything then, really.
But let’s step back for a moment and assume that somehow, you’re uninterested in Smash Bros. Brawl and are looking for some new games to play. Today’s Virtual Console update just might be up your alley! Unless, of course, you’re a Japanophobe. But then, there isn’t any pleasing you is there, Mr. mythical hates life man?

This week’s Virtual Console update is the second-ever import week, featuring games that have never been officially released in the Americas! As with the previous import titles, Sin & Punishment and the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2, most titles feature only small amounts of English translation and an additional 100 point premium.

DoReMi Fantasy: Milon’s DokiDoki Adventure (SNES; 900 points) - Considered by many to be one of the finest platformers ever, DoReMi can suffer at times from appearing slightly derivative of other games in the genre. However, to its credit, DoReMi is an almost perfect refinement of those traditions and trappings. If you’re even a marginal fan of the genre, do not hesitate to give this game a go. VC-Reviews agrees and gave this game a 5 out 5.

Puyo Puyo 2: Tsuu (GEN; 900 points) - Also new to these shores this week is a version of the classic game Puyo-Pop. Nearly a recognized form of currency in most countries, Puyo-Pop has seen a release on just about every videogame system made. Unfortunately, that kind of diminishes from the excitement you probably should be feeling right about now. If you’ve never played a Puyo game, and love puzzlers like Tetris, then this is a great place to start. However, this entry doesn’t offer anything too different from the other versions of the game, so if you’re a veteran, you may need to think it over. VC-Reviews gave the game a 4 out of 5.

Overall, a great week for gaming in general. With Smash Bros. finally released stateside, as well as DoReMi Fantasy being given a chance to prove itself to us Yanks, there are few who can truly complain.

Unless of course you’re Mr. mythical hates life man.
