Wii Homebrew takes massive first steps

Having recently hacked the Wii via a Twilight Princess gamesave exploit, the Wii Homebrew Community has taken the next step in fully cracking open the lovely white little box: they’ve managed to install a custom channel to the Wii menu that can boot custom code from the Wii’s SD card slot. For those only passingly keeping tabs on the Homebrew Scene: up until a few days ago, one needed to boot through Twilight Princess every time they wanted to run the exploit and, to run any code, one also needed a special SD-to-Memory Card adapter originally made for the Gamecube. Considering how both those requirements have been smashed within a week, the future for Wii Homebrew looks incredibly promising.

Hopefully we’ll see some legitimate uses for the newly created “Homebrew channel,” as opposed to just a simple way to circumvent the Virtual Console. A Linux channel would certainly be a welcome addition to the Wii Menu, that’s for sure. At the very least, let’s hope this doesn’t become the Wii’s Dreamcast moment.
