Okay, sure, let’s talk Sonic Unleashed

If you’re a Sega fan, or just simply have a passion for Sonic, you probably heard about a spiky blue hedgehog’s latest videogame while combing the internet over the weekend. Currently titled Sonic Unleashed, the game has gained a lot of attention for, ostensibly, being a throwback to classic Sonic games. The first, non-cinematic screenshots showed Sonic from a perspective he is best in: the side. Sure, a few screens showed a Secret Rings-like behind-the-hedgehog view, but it at last seemed like Sega had started listening.

Shortly after the initial screenshots, a video was released. Thankfully, fears of extended Sonic Adventure sequences were dashed, as that behind-the-hedgehog view only made a brief appearance. It also seemed as though Sonic would be the only playable character. The screenshots even showed him only squaring off against Dr. Eggman, too! Sonic himself appeared to have received an attitude adjustment, sporting a more classic pot-belly design! Suffice to say, things were looking really good. Of course, if you’re a Sega fan, you’ve probably learned by now to temper any excitement you feel when the company announces something; there is usually always a rub.
However, the rub hasn’t really come yet. Currently, the little we know of the title confirms an overall better Sonic game than we’ve been accustomed to. However, this isn’t to say that there isn’t room for fear and doubt: see the topmost image above? The one with Sonic and some thing standing behind him? Well, that thing standing behind Sonic the Hedgehog is apparently Sonic the Hedgehog. Yes, too scared to just release a normal Sonic game with typical Sonic mechanics, Sega has yet again added a special gimmick for this outing: Sonic transforms into a werewolf! To perform melee attacks, no less!
Bravo Sega. You’re like the psycho ex-girlfriend you try and keep a friendly relationship with. For the most part, everything goes well and you can have fun together. But every once and a while they quickly and abruptly remind you why you decided to stop dating them in the first place.
Little else is known about the game. The target platforms haven’t even been officially announced, but considering the hi-res, 720p nature of the screenshots, Xbox 360 and the PS3 will most likely get the game we’re seeing now. There is currently a rumor that the Wii may get a version of Sonic Unleashed, but a lot of it would probably have to be reworked to fit on Nintendo’s machine. The game is currently set for a November 2008 release.
Sega will show the rest of their hand, and possibly give you the rub, when they hold a “gamer day” in May.
